Many types of businesses and organisations utilise various types of lifting equipment, which can include passenger/goods lifts, escalators, electric chain blocks, fork lift trucks and patient hoists. Lifting equipment can often be in regular use, with varying loadings and duty cycles.

The UK's Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations (LOLER) place duties on people and companies who own, operate, or have control over lifting equipment.

A requirement of LOLER is that, in many cases, equipment used for lifting is subject to statutory,  periodic 'thorough examinations' by a 'Competent Person'.

A wide range of equipment is covered by LOLER; from lifts to cranes and hoists, fork-lift trucks to mobile elevating work platforms, as well as and many other types of lifting plant.

LOLER also cover lifting tackle and accessories (for example, chains, slings, eye bolts, etc).
