    Senior Vice President Head of Financial Planning & Analysis

    Martin John is Senior Vice President, Head of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) at HSB. The FP&A group provides an objective voice on financial performance with data-driven analysis and insights that shape business direction and strategy. The Engineering and ATS Accounting operation and Reporting and Reserving function support the business, as well as reporting requirements for parent company Munich Re, management and regulatory stakeholders. 

    Mr. John joined HSB in 2017, as the Vice President Corporate Controller. His team provided high quality accounting results, reporting and analysis to senior leadership, regulators and Munich Re. He was also the Executive Sponsor for the Finance Excellence transformation strategy focused on developing the Finance organization of the future. He was promoted to SVP and Head of Financial Planning & Analysis in June 2021.

    Prior to joining HSB, he was the Vice President of Financial Reporting, Analysis and Controls for Mass Mutual Insurance Company. He led an organization of more than 120 finance professionals responsible for management reporting, enterprise strategic cost management, financial controls, reporting systems, and accounting operations. As the Executive Sponsor, he implemented the first Finance-wide, early-in-career financial development rotational program. He also the led the development of their Finance Transformation Strategy.

    Prior to joining Mass Mutual, Mr. John spent 13 years at The Hartford Insurance Company working in several financial leadership roles ranging from financial reporting to the CFO of the Claims organization. He ultimately led The Hartford’s companywide Finance Transformation Program focused on strategic cost management.

    Mr. John began his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC in 1994 and held various roles from staff auditor to audit manager in the insurance practice.

    He graduated from The University of Hartford with a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering and a Master of Science in Professional Accounting. He is a certified public accountant (CPA) in Connecticut. Mr. John is actively involved in the community serving as Treasurer on the boards of The Amistad Center for Art and Culture and the Charter Oak Health Center, as well as Audit Committee chair for both the University of Hartford’s Board of Regents and the Connecticut Science Center Board Of Directors. He is also a member of the University of Hartford Barney Business School Board of Visitors.
