    Chair of the Board of Management of Munich Re.

    Dr. Joachim Wenning  was born in Jerusalem, Israel, in 1965.

    After obtaining a degree in economics at the University of Munich, he joined Munich Re in 1991, where he worked until early 1997 as a treaty specialist with technical responsibility for life reinsurance clients in Germany. Parallel to this, Dr. Wenning wrote his doctoral thesis, for which he was awarded the designation of Dr. oec. publ. in 1995. At the beginning of 1997, Dr. Wenning transferred to the Group company Hamburg-Mannheimer Versicherungs-AG in Hamburg for two and a half years, during which time he implemented a number of strategic projects to realign marketing and sales. Following his return from Hamburg, Dr. Wenning headed the department "Life Reinsurance Latin America, Southern Europe and the Middle East" from mid-2000 onwards, with responsibility for life reinsurance business in these areas. Following his appointment in May 2005 to the position of CEO  of New Re, Geneva, Dr. Wenning took over responsibility for the company's strategic development, with an expanded mandate for financial solutions in life and health reinsurance and for financial institutions business.  

    Dr. Wenning has been a Member of the Board of Management of Munich Re since 1 January 2009. From 2009 until the beginning of 2017, he was responsible for the Life Division, and from October 2013 until April 2017 he was also responsible for the Human Resources division and held the position of Labour Relations Director.  

    Dr. Wenning was appointed Chair of the Board of Management with effect from 27 April 2017. He has since been responsible for Group Holdings; Group Strategy and M&A; and Group Human Resources. Currently, his responsibilities include the divisions Strategy & Innovation; Group Communications; Group Audit; Economics, Sustainability & Public Affairs; Group Executive Affairs; and Group Compliance and Legal.
