At Munich Re, IoT experts come together and take on a multitude of roles with a single goal in mind: to build ground-breaking IoT solutions.

    Shaping tomorrow´s world

Connecting physical and virtual objects and letting them work together through modern IT - what sounds like science fiction has long since become reality. Systems equipped with sensors support people in their everyday lives and at work. Additionally, they support network systems independent of people. Munich Re's IoT experts are helping to transform existing business models into this innovative concept. They contribute to the modern IoT landscape with a deep understanding of risk transfer and profound experience in developing digital business models.

Working on IoT projects at Munich Re is quite different from what you might expect. Less than five percent of what I do deals with actual insurance topics.

Current topics in the field of the Internet of Things

Together with Munich Re, Maschinenfabrik Reinhausen has developed a new type of service based on the Internet of Things. It makes it possible to monitor the operating status of transformers in real time and without interruption and thereby initiate necessary maintenance in a timely manner. The specialty here is that Munich Re covers the risk of a transformer failing despite constant monitoring.
More and more places are using sensors that transmit measurement data to IoT platforms, taking IT security into account. There, the information is evaluated in real time, usually in order to immediately identify any need for action and to be able to react at an early stage. This is a concept that has enormous potential for loss prevention. A pilot project by Munich Re and VHV Versicherungen demonstrated this.
There is a general consensus that many business models in the insurance industry are not fit for the long term, or are already outdated. This is due to the continuing low interest rates, volatile customer requirements and rapid advances in digitisation. However, digitisation is also creating a range of opportunities for insurers, the potential of which practically only has to be tapped. A successful project at HSB illustrates what a solution based on digital technology offering both insurers and customers potential for savings could look like. Sensors detect damage at an early stage, thereby helping to confine it significantly.
