Diabetes following COVID-19 infection: Is it common?

New-onset diabetes mellitus following COVID-19 infection has been frequently reported. Multiple studies have suggested that the incidence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes increased during the pandemic. Systematic reviews of the studies came to similar conclusions. However, these analyses were not without limitations in terms of structure, data used, and consideration of potentially contributing factors such as pre-COVID-19 unrecognized diabetes, lack of exercise, and poor dietary habits during lockdowns.
