03Portrait of Mark Bove

Staying ahead of the next big storm

Mark Bove has been working as Senior Research Meteorologist in Munich Re’s Catastrophe Risk Management Department in Princeton since 2000. Mark’s research made national headlines on several occasions and he was the 1998 recipient of "The Father James B. Macelwane Award for Meteorology".

Ever since he can remember, Mark Bove was fascinated by the weather. While other kids were watching Sesame Street or playing Atari, Mark was busy watching, hours on end, “The Weather Channel”. So perhaps it comes as no surprise that the 35-year-old award-winning meteorologist ended up pursuing his lifelong passion, becoming a Senior Research Meteorologist in Munich Re’s Catastrophe Risk Management Department in Princeton, New Jersey.

In a nutshell, Mark’s job is to determine the risk posed by natural catastrophe – with an emphasis on U.S exposure – to the insurance industry and to a greater extent, society at large. He accomplishes this through the testing and analysis of commercially-available catastrophe models, providing guidance and tools to assist in underwriting natural catastrophe risk; and educating actuaries, underwriters, and clients on natural catastrophes and catastrophe modeling issues.

The field of catastrophe management, only about 30 years old, continues to evolve rapidly, always providing new opportunities and challenges. Munich Re has demonstrated its leadership in the area of catastrophe management with an enormous investment in natural catastrophe research and modeling. With worldwide over thirty geo scientists covering multiple disciplines, Munich Re possesses a superior level of understanding of the technical aspects of natural catastrophes and modeling – which allows it to share a great deal of knowledge with clients and thus improve their understanding of these issues.
